Elliptical treadmills are quickly gaining popularity in health clubs across the country. These new and unique machines offer a low impact very efficient workout. However just getting on one and running through the motions will help you burn some calories but if you want maximum fat burning from your elliptical workouts you need to follow some proven elliptical workout tips.

Stretch Before Your Workout-Nothing will stop your fitness goals faster then an injury. Stretching helps to eliminate the potential of injury by warming up your muscles and getting it ready to exercise. Some common areas to stretch are your hamstrings, quadriceps and inner and outer thighs.

Vary Your Speed- Running at one constant speed is great exercise but to really shock your body and get in shape faster you should change it up a little bit. To vary your speed try sprinting for one minute the walking slowly for a minute followed by another sprint. If you repeat this process for thirty to forty minutes you will work your body with an intensity that has to be felt to be believed.

Change Direction- The elliptical trainer is unique in that it is the only exercise machine that gives the user the option to run backwards and do so in a safe manner. running backwards will really work your upper body intensely. And since humans are not conditioned to run backwards your muscles will respond very positively. Just remember to start slowly and build up speed once you feel comfortable.

Use Different Stride Lengths-Many of today’s elliptical machines have the option of adjusting the stride length of the machine. This design was really to let the machine be used by a wide variety of people. But you can also use it to work your body in new and different ways. To do this just never use the same stride two workouts in a row, or better yet change strides in the middle of your workout to really mix it up.

Condition Your Upper Body- Most modern elliptical‘s have incorporated levers into the machines that will work your upper body. Consistent use of these levers will help you build a stronger core as well as stronger back, shoulders and arms.

As you can see the elliptical machine is a very unique piece of gym equipment that can be used in a wide variety of ways. So the next time you go to the gym give one of these tips a try and see how it perform s for you!

Considering a New Balance elliptical trainer and want to know if they’re a good value for you? This article will give you the low down on the New Balance brand of elliptical trainers.

New Balance elliptical trainers are the new kids on the block. New Balance is probably better known for their fantastic running shoes than their ellipticals. New Balance partnered with Fitness Quest in 2003 to start making fitness equipment like bikes, treadmills and elliptical trainers.

Although Fitness Quest doesn’t have the best reputation in the fitness equipment business (they also produce the Total Gym, Ab Lounge and Tony Little products), their elliptical trainers might still be worth a look.

New Balance produces several economy to mid-priced elliptical trainers ranging from $949 to $1399. So the competition is pretty fierce as they’re going up against heavies like Sole and Schwinn. How do they stack up? Here are the strengths and weakness of New Balance Elliptical Trainers.

Strengths:

Upper Body Arms – All New Balance machines offer upper body arms bars, which is a feature most buyers want. Upper body arm bars allow you to tone and work your upper body resulting in more calories burned in less time.

Oversized Comform™ Foot Pedals – ComForm™ foot platforms offer a built-in skid resistant surface and allow you to find the most comfortable foot position within the elliptical motion. The extra large platforms support your body weight more evenly and provide added stability.

Magnetic Resistance – This is the best form of resistance (and the standard form among most elliptical trainers). Starting at 8 levels of resistance and working up to 16, these ellipticals offer a chance to challenge your body and burn even more calories.

Warranty – New Balance Ellipticals are covered by a standard warranty: 10 years on the frame, 2 years electronics and 1 year on parts. This is a decent warranty – better than some brands, not as good as others.

15″ – 18″ Stride Length – The cheaper New Balance crosstrainers (the 5.5 and the 8.0) only offer 15″ stride lengths which is fairly small and will result in a less effective workout. If you’re taller or really want to pick up your pace on your elliptical, this stride length may not be the most comfortable for you.

On the other hand the higher grade New Balance machines (the 9.0 and the 9.5) offer 18″ stride lengths which aren’t bad at all and will help you get an overall more efficient workout.

Weaknesses:

The New Balance brand is fairly new to the market, so they may not have had the time to work out the kinks in their product line yet.

Also, there are several similarly priced brands that give you a bit more for your money like longer warranties, higher user weight capacities and/or more workout programs.

Summary:

New Balance elliptical trainers do offer some promising features including a decent warranty, several resistance levels, oversized foot pedals and attractive, advanced consoles.

We would recommend the higher end models (the 9.0 and the 9.5) before the economy models because the stride length is longer and you just get more for your money.

The real downside is that New Balance ellipticals are in an already overcrowded market with other more proven brands. Competition is fierce and there are several similarly priced models that offer more in terms of warranties, workout programs, stride lengths and user weight capacities.

Given some time however, New Balance ellipticals may prove to be a force to be reckoned with.

It is vital to include cardio in your exercise routine to get the full benefit of a workout or a weight loss regimen. While it may not be readily apparent why personal trainers advise their clients to purchase a treadmill for home workouts, it all comes down to the benefits of cardiovascular exercise.

Treadmills provide a fully controlled workout that is easily adjusted to complement the needs and fitness level of any individual. The benefit of owning one gives you the convenience for being able to work out anytime, even in the middle of the night. This article gives you six additional benefits of using these machines.

You Have Control Over The Pace

These machines allow you to have control over the pace of your workout, giving you the opportunity to match your workout to your cardio fitness level and desired outcome. Since it is electronically controlled, you don’t have to worry about the pace getting too fast or too slow, giving you the cardiovascular intensity you need. Since you can’t automatically slow down as you tire, you must push through, completing the best type of workout.

You Can Control The Intensity

Most treadmills offer you the option of setting the intensity and the incline of your cardio workout. They can even offer a pre-set program that will slowly increase the intensity as you progress and can even give you a workout and then a break with a series of uphill and downhill sessions. These pre-set programs give you opportunity to warm up and cool down properly and can help you avoid the plateaus common with repetitive workout routines.

You Control The Length

Treadmills will allow you to set a time limit for your cardio routine. As your body adjusts, you can control the length of your workout and can log more miles until you reach your goals. This pushes you further than you might go without having this control and it improves your cardiovascular routine because you probably won’t stop before reaching the end of the mileage you set. Since you can use these machines right in your own home, you can hit your mileage mark no matter the time of day or the weather outside because you control everything when you walk or run indoors with this equipment.

You Can Achieve Optimum Cardiovascular Health

Getting the most out of your cardiovascular exercise requires reaching your optimum heart rate and then maintaining that rate for a specific period. Treadmills are easy to program, just determine your target heart rate and the pace of the routine you need to get there. They even have a memory so they will remember your past workouts, eliminating having to guess the routine you did the day before. When it starts to feel easy to finish your workout, simply increase the speed and intensity to further improve your cardio health.

You Can Burn More Calories And Lose Weight Faster

If you are interested in burning calories and losing weight, there is no other exercise machine better than a treadmill. The cardiovascular exercise they provide makes it easy to work out at your best level. You can burn 200 more calories with these machines than you can with its closest competition, the exercise bike.

You Control Your Movement

Since treadmills eliminate the outdoor dangers of dodging obstacles or walking over uneven terrain, you have control over your movements. After becoming accustomed to walking on its unique surface, you can gain the most benefit from each movement. You will suffer less impact on your knees and ankles than you will by walking on the pavement, making them a great alternative for people with joint or mobility problems.

Treadmills are an effective way to achieve excellent cardiovascular health. The numerous options available along with the convenience make them a better choice than other cardio equipment or outdoor exercise.

Elliptical cross trainers have been around for several years and their popularity grows continually. Elliptical cross trainers give you an impact-free, complete workout that seems less stressful than with other types of fitness equipment. You will expend just as much energy using an elliptical cross trainer, but you will feel as if you are not working quite as hard due to the minimal impact on the joints and the level of comfort you will feel while training. An elliptical cross trainer combines the benefits of a stair climber, treadmill, and a rowing machine. You can effective work several areas of the body at one time and expend less effort than if you did the exercises separately.

When choosing an elliptical cross trainer, you should look for a machine with upper body levers, both forward and reverse motions, and adjustable pedals and resistance. You can purchase an elliptical cross trainer for as little as $200 and as much as $3,500 or more. The type you choose will depend on the frequency in which you intend to use your elliptical cross trainer and the intensity and additional features you desire. If you intend to perform intense workouts with your elliptical cross trainer then you should expect to spend at least $100.

Elliptical cross trainers have replaced many of the more traditional types of fitness equipment found in gyms and in homes. You can get a highly effective workout with one simple machine instead of needing several items to achieve your fitness goals. There are several brands of elliptical cross trainers and a large price range from which to choose.

So, you have made the decision to begin an exercise routine and get yourself in shape by utilizing cardio exercise equipment? That is great news, but understanding some of the different types of cardio equipment and which ones are right for you can be difficult at times. Here are some tips to be aware of.

Cardio exercise is a great way to boost your heart health, while also burning off the fat by raising your heart rate.

When it comes to home cardio exercise equipment you have a lot of options to choose from including:

Treadmills

A treadmill will probably be everyone’s best choice in home exercise equipment. For cardio workouts a treadmill is not only easy to use, but it gives you a great workout. You can choose your own speed and incline as well as length of time. In addition, a treadmill will also show you how many calories you have burned.

For most people, the biggest obstacle they face is knowing which kind of treadmill to buy. You see everything from a WalMart brand for $300 up to a professional machine for $10,000.

The best divorce is to set a budget and then begin to do some comparison shopping. Look for models with a 1-2 HP motor, wide belt and a good warranty. You can find some reviews of various treadmills on our website.

Treadmills are great because you can use them any time of the day or night. You are not concerned with bad weather or if the gym is open or closed.

Elliptical Trainers

An elliptical trainer is another great piece of cardio exercise equipment. Their low impact workout provides an excellent way to get your heart rate up, while also burning fat.

Like the treadmill, an elliptical trainer allows you to choose the level of workout routine that you desire.

You will find reviews of various ellipticals on our site.

Stationary Bike

This is yet another good piece of cardio exercise equipment. Although many people may think this type of fitness equipment has passed its prime, the truth is just the opposite.

Today’s stationary bikes are complete with pre-programmed cardio workouts, cooling fans and even high-tech video routines. With their low impact and user friendly features, a stationary bike is an excellent way to get a good cardio workout.

Step Machines

Though not as popular as treadmills or ellipticals, step machines are quite good at giving you a cardio workout. They can easily be programmed to give you a workout routine on any level.

As you can see, you have many options when it comes to cardio exercise equipment. Before you decide on purchasing one, try them out and be sure you enjoy using it. This way you will enjoy yourself and have fun during your workouts.

There is no question that a treadmill comes in very handy to get your cardiovascular exercise in when the weather outside does not cooperate. When you wake up in the morning and you see the down pour of rain like a monsoon season somewhere in the south Pacific it will easily make you go straight back to bed.

Never fear though that is what’s great about owning a treadmill. If you do not own one but have access to one at your local gym or health club that will do as well. If you do not own one and do not have access to one, you might want to consider purchasing one within your budget.

A treadmill is perfect for anyone who is trying to get in the recommended three days of cardiovascular activity for twenty minutes per day. Treadmills make it easier to not miss a beat in your routine for any variety of reasons (as mentioned above).

If you do not know what a treadmill is, in its most basic definition it is a machine that allows a person to perform some type of cardiovascular activity without leaving the inside of a building and keeps them within the same general location.

Ok so the definition was a bit more detailed than I first thought but you get the point. A treadmill can be more than just a machine where you run in place. The make rock climbing walls that operate like a vertical treadmill, stair masters and stair climbers although named differently also fall within the category of a treadmill.

There are a variety of treadmills out on the market. Which one you buy or use will depend on your budget and what gets you going. For example, I do not like elliptical treadmill machines. If you are not sure what one is, Google it and you will see. To me they are as boring as they get. I would much rather have a treadmill that changes the incline of the platform for which I am speed walking on. To me this a great form of interval training.

You can purchase a treadmill that runs off of electric or are self powered. Again I prefer electric since there are so many more options that come with it. For example, you can set varying speeds, inclines and resistances. In some models you can also compete against the computer as if you were in a race. Of course the more options that you add, the higher the cost will be.

If you prefer using your treadmill to walking or running outside, that is fine as long as you get in your three days of twenty minutes of cardiovascular exercise in. This is what is recommended by the American Heart Association.

Today many treadmills will fit into almost any location within your home. Features include where they fold down or up to fit into closets or underneath your bed. If that is important to you, then be sure to look for a model that offers this.

There is no question adding a treadmill to your exercise room is definite advantage in your win over weight loss and good health. Now all you need to do is pick one that has the options you are looking for, stay within your budget and you will be ready to go.

The battle of elliptical vs treadmill is currently going on in every health club in the world and each piece of equipment is trying to hold the title. While each piece of equipment does have its own positives and negatives the elliptical machine is starting to emerge as the overall winner of the elliptical vs treadmill battle!

Elliptical trainers are the new player to the fitness game and were designed to combine the the functions of not only a treadmill but also that of an exercise bike and a stair climber, this in turn will give you a very effective and efficient workout. Many ellipticals also have the ability to exercise the upper body allowing you to get more workout in less time. To mix things up and have more fun with your workouts you can even run backwards on these machines and target your muscles from another angle. Ellipticals were also designed to be extremely low impact and are great for people with joint problems, back problems and even arthritis! With combined movements the elliptical machine is a great way to work your whole body, burn calories and lose fat all in a low impact workout environment.

The treadmill is the old gym standby and has been around for over 40 years and is by far the most popular piece of aerobic gym equipment in use today. The treadmill does a good job of burning calories and working the lower body but they do have some drawbacks when this debate comes up. First off the surface of the treadmill is not very low impact so people with joint problems or other aliments may find it painful to use one effectively. Second the workouts are very basic and can become boring and mundane relatively quickly. The standard treadmill also offers no upper body workout so you must use another piece of equipment for that further increasing your workout time. Although this is the best piece of equipment for training and conditioning serious runners.

With the overall ease of use combined with low impact efficient total body workouts the elliptical machine is the clear winner of the elliptical vs treadmill battle. But for training and conditioning the serious athlete the treadmill may is still the better choice.

Trying to decide if an elliptical machine is right for you? Wondering about the benefits of elliptical machines?

Elliptical trainers offer you several unique workout advantages that other machines do not. Here are 6 key benefits of elliptical machines to help you decide if it’s the right machine for you:

1) Lower Perceived Rate of Exertion – On an elliptical you usually work both your arms and legs (whereas on a bike or treadmill you’re only working your legs).

This means you get a more full body workout – and this results in what experts call a ‘Lower Perceived Rate of Exertion’. This means you actually worked harder than you feel like you worked – and burned more calories. So working out on an elliptical can actually maximize your workout time and minimize your fatigue.

2) Low Impact – Last year, my 65-year-old mother tried an elliptical trainer for the first time. With bad arthritis and fairly poor health, she stays far away from any type of exercise equipment. However with an elliptical she couldn’t get over how easy it felt on her joints. She was working up a steady sweat within no time.

Elliptical workouts are a lot lower impact than other machines. They’re easier on the joints, hips and back (just make sure you’re buying a high quality elliptical that supports proper body mechanics).

This makes them ideal for older exercisers, those who are prone to shin splints or even anyone who wants a lower impact workout than traditional fitness machines.

3) Build Bone Density – Elliptical trainers give you weight resistant workouts that help build bone density and fight osteoporosis. The weight resistant workouts also help to increase your resting metabolic rate so you may continue to burn calories post-workout.

4) Quieter Than A Treadmill – If sound is an issue for you, an elliptical can be much quieter than a treadmill. Ellipticals don’t have motors to run (and you don’t pound on the deck as with treadmill jogging). Most rely on magnetic resistance which is often (especially on high quality ellipticals) almost silent.

5) Cross-Train Different Sets of Muscle Groups – Unlike treadmills or rowing machines where you’re pretty much stuck doing one motion, with elliptical trainers, you can actually target and crosstrain different sets of muscles.

Some ellipticals come with incline or ramp, which actually changes the slope of the elliptical motion. This helps you work and train different muscle groups. This can mean more calories burned and again, a more efficient workout.

6) More Versatile Than Other Machines – One of the key benefits of elliptical machines is that you have so many different movement options that you don’t get with other machines.

For example, you can choose forward or backward directions. You can choose to add resistance to the motion or even change the slope of the motion (if your elliptical offers incline or ramp). You can work your arms and legs, or choose to just work your legs alone.

Some ellipticals are now even including workout programs that target a specific goal (like weight loss) or body part (glutes, hamstrings). And some manufacturers are even putting some fun workout tools into their machines like iPod/Mp3 hookups with built in speakers. So you can listen to your favorite tunes or audiobooks when you workout.

So those are 6 key benefits of elliptical machines. If you decide that an elliptical is right for you, make sure to find one that is designed for proper body mechanics, gives you the stride length you need and offers high quality construction.
